Women’s footballer, 21, rushed to hospital as she suffers ‘traumatic brain injury’ after collapsing during match in worrying scenes

A Spanish footballer was rushed to hospital with a worrying brain injury during a Women’s Champions League match on Wednesday night.

Atletico Madrid‘s clash with Juventus was overshadowed by disturbing scenes after Andrea Medina, 21, collapsed on the pitch and required urgent medical treatment.

The left-back, who began her senior career at Real Betis before moving to Atletico Madrid in 2022, fell and remained on the floor for a lengthy period of time after colliding with Juventus star Barbara Bonansea.

After receiving emergency treatment from the club’s medical staff, Medina was carried off on a stretcher and rushed to hospital in an ambulance.

English broadcaster Jacqui Oatley, who was commentating on the match at Centro Deportivo Alcala de Henares on Wednesday, described the incident as ‘horrendous’ in a post on social media.

She wrote on X: ‘This is horrendous. We’ve just commentated on Atletico Madrid’s @UWCL game v Juventus for Disney+ and young Spanish left back Andrea Medina suddenly went down – she received urgent lengthy treatment before being carried off. We wish her all the very best and hope she’s OK.’

Providing an update on the player’s health after the match, Atletico Madrid women said in a statement: ‘Andrea Medina was replaced after suffering a traumatic brain injury. 

‘The footballer is doing well but has been transferred to a hospital center to undergo additional tests.’

The match, which was played out in its entirety despite the concerning injury, ended with Atletico Madrid suffering a 2-1 defeat by Juventus, who prevailed thanks to goals from Emma Stolen Godo and Bonansea.

The defeat saw Atletico slip to 10th in the Women’s Champions League table with one win and two losses from three games, while Juventus climbed to eighth place.
