Just seven days remain until Rachel Reeves lays out her so-called “nightmare before Christmas” Budget to the Commons.

Speculation over what Ms Reeves might do to ease her 11-figure “black hole” appeared to have reached its peak late last week when she tore up her Budget plans and ditched highly contentious plans to hike income tax.

One person briefed on the proposals confirmed to GB News the original tax plan had been ripped up – but the Chancellor still faces a semi-self-imposed target of £40billion to be raised at the despatch box.

Officials were understood to have committed to the major U-turn over fears the tax raid would be politically devastating.

Downing Street officials insisted the move had not been made because the PM faced a coup – though it came just days after a fiery “briefing war” saw Wes Streeting thrust into the spotlight as a potential challenger to Sir Keir Starmer.

But now, GB News is asking: With one week to go, could a disastrous Budget bring down the Government?
