Legendary San Diego Padres pitcher Randy Jones has died at the age of 75, the team has announced.

Jones, who spent the first eight years of his MLB career in San Diego, captured the Cy Young Award and earned two All-Star selections during his memorable stint with the Padres. He passed away Tuesday, according to their statement.

The baseball icon was drafted by San Diego in 1972 and quickly became both a household name and one of the sport’s most dominant arms. In 1975 he led the National League with a 2.24 ERA while winning 20 games.

The following year Jones produced one of the greatest pitching seasons in Padres history after throwing 25 complete games, winning 22, and sweeping up the 1976 National League Cy Young Award in the process. He remained in San Diego until 1980, before spending the final two years of his MLB career with the New York Mets.

After building a special relationship with the Padres and their fanbase, Jones, who returned to live in north San Diego County, maintained popularity in the city and was a regular at Petco Park for many years up until his death.

‘With deep sorrow and heavy hearts, the Padres mourn the passing of our beloved left-hander, Randy Jones,’ San Diego’s statement read. ‘Pandy was a cornerstone of our franchise for over five decades, highlighted by becoming the first Padres pitcher to win the Cy Young Award.

‘Inducted into the Padres Hall of Fame in 1999, his impact and popularity only grew in his post-playing career, becoming a tremendous ambassador for the team and a true fan favorite. Crossing paths with RJ and talking baseball or life was a joy for everyone fortunate enough to spend time with him.

‘Randy was committed to San Diego, the Padres, and his family. He was a giant in our lives and our franchise history.

‘We extend our heartfelt sympathy to his wife Marie and the entire Jones family during this difficult time. RJ will be greatly missed.’
