Trent Williams future with San Francisco 49ers uncertain ahead of NFL season

Trent Williams and the San Francisco 49ers are working to resolve contract differences, but uncertainty remains as the veteran left tackle enters the final year of his deal.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, both sides remain in contact. General manager John Lynch said: “I think we’re on the right track.” Still, Williams is set to count nearly $39 million against the salary cap in 2026, one of the highest figures in the league.

At 37, Williams continues to perform at an elite level. He earned his 12th Pro Bowl and fifth All Pro selection last season and was graded as the No. 3 tackle in the NFL by Pro Football Focus.

If talks break down, Williams would likely draw strong interest from Super Bowl contenders.

Teams such as the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots could explore adding a proven blindside protector.

New England coach Mike Vrabel recently said of his young tackle, “He’s 22 years old. He’s our left tackle,” but the potential availability of a player like Williams could change plans.

For now, the 49ers hope to keep one of the league’s premier offensive linemen in place.
