Thomas Tuchel has explained his decision to leave Trent Alexander-Arnold out of his latest England squad, with this summer’s World Cup creeping closer.
The right-back hasn’t made the cut for upcoming friendlies with Uruguay and Japan following a debut campaign at Real Madrid that has been hindered by inconsistency.
Alexander-Arnold’s natural talent is obvious, with the defender previously a key player for Liverpool as they won Premier League titles under Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot.
He has never truly adapted to life on the international stage, however, and is now in danger of missing out on this summer’s World Cup squad.
Tuchel, speaking at a press conference on Friday, explained why Alexander-Arnold has been omitted.
“It’s a tough decision, and Trent is a big name – a huge talent with an impressive career. I know what he can give us, but I’ve opted for others,” he said.
“We were very good in September, October, and November, and I know what Trent can offer. I’ve also faced challenges when he’s played against my teams.

“The players in camp at right full-back must push to earn their spot on the plane to the World Cup.”
Alexander-Arnold isn’t the only big name to miss out.
Ollie Watkins, who previously fired England to the final of the 2024 European Championships, has been snubbed amid his inconsistency for Aston Villa this season.

Luke Shaw hasn’t been included despite his impressive form for Manchester United, while Danny Welbeck, Alex Scott and Reece James are also big names in danger of watching the World Cup from home.
However, Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo have earnt recalls.
Both players toiled during the Ruben Amorim regime, like many of their teammates, but have experienced new leases of life at Old Trafford following Michael Carrick’s appointment as interim manager.
Explaining his decision to pick the pair, Tuchel said: “Manchester United have had an outstanding run since Michael Carrick took charge, and Harry and Kobbie have been a big part of that.
“As I said, this is the last camp before the trip to the US, so it’s also my final chance to get to know new players, to learn about them, and see how they fit in. Harry isn’t a new player in an England shirt, of course, but he’s new to me in this camp.
“I want to observe how he interacts with other players, see him on the pitch, understand what he’s capable of, and gather enough insight to make clear decisions.”

GETTYIt has been four months since England last played.
And as friendlies with Uruguay and Japan loom, Tuchel is happy to be returning to the dugout.
“I am happy and excited to be back. This March camp is a unique one. We have already qualified, and our players are at a crucial stage in their club seasons,” he explained.
“It’s the last chance to impress and compete for a spot. That is why we have spilt the squad.”
