Controversy broke out during the Super Bowl as star receiver Stefon Diggs was involved in an on-pitch fight – before officials gave no penalty.

Seahawks cornerback Josh Jobe appeared to shove the Patriots’ wide receiver following the end of a play while he was off the field.

He then seemed to punch his opponent during an outburst.

Diggs responded furiously and chased Jobe down.

The two engaged in a faceoff, with both players appearing to push and punch.

But referees were unable to review it because no flag was thrown.

Neither player was ejected.

Viewers took to social media to express their confusion about the no-call.

Another said: “The fact that not a flag was thrown AND he threw a punch?! UNBELIEVABLE”

A third added: “Did they just punch Stefon Diggs?”

A fourth quipped: “Justice for Diggs, that punch was dirty.”

It added drama to a Super Bowl that, up until that point, had delivered a frustrating spectacle for the 70,000 supporters in attendance at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

Seattle and New England produced a dire first half of offence, with both sides failing to score a touchdown.

Seahawks kicker Jason Myers proved the sole bright spot, converting three field goals to establish a 9-0 advantage before the half.

Quarterbacks Sam Darnold and Drake Maye both failed to establish any offensive rhythm, with Maye suffering particularly badly behind a porous offensive line that allowed three sacks.

Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel was spotted urging his players to “calm down” amid the dismal performance.

Fans took to social media with scathing assessments, one declaring: “This might be the most boring Super Bowl of all-time.”

The scoreless touchdown streak finally ended early in the fourth quarter when Darnold found tight end AJ Barner with a 16-yard scoring strike, putting Seattle firmly in control.

The breakthrough appeared to galvanise New England, who, after the punch-up occurred, responded swiftly with Maye’s 35-yard touchdown pass to receiver Mack Hollins.
