Over 750 acres to be acquired to ease traffic burden in city and cantonment areas

RAWALPINDI:

All stakeholders have agreed to shift public transport bus stands, truck terminals, and warehouses located along the Rawalpindi Ring Road route, including Faizabad, General Bus Stand Pirwadhai, Peshawar Road, and Chungi No 26. The Rawalpindi Ring Road project is expected to be completed in March this year.

More than 750 acres of land will be acquired for this purpose. Implementation of the decision will eliminate the heavy traffic burden currently affecting these areas. Passengers travelling to other cities will be able to reach new transport terminals on the Ring Road via smaller vehicles, ensuring smoother arrivals and departures.

Goods transport arriving at Ganj Mandi from across the country will also be restricted to Ring Road truck terminals.

Currently, heavy public transport from all four provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir travels via the motorway and GT Road and terminates at existing Rawalpindi transport hubs, creating extraordinary traffic pressure in the city and cantonment areas. Similarly, goods transport serving Ganj Mandi has caused severe congestion and damaged inner-city road infrastructure.

To address these issues, the Rawalpindi Development Authority’s planning wing, the Regional Transport Authority, traffic police, the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation, and other stakeholders have agreed on relocating these facilities to the Ring Road.

Under the plan, over 750 acres will be acquired, including 524 acres for warehouses and truck stands, 35 acres on the Ring Road’s southern side for bus and truck terminals, 163 acres on the northern side for light and medium-duty truck parking zones, and 45 acres on the northern side for heavy-duty bus and truck terminals.

Additional land reallocation will also be carried out for warehouses and truck stands.
