Police Scotland was called to the scene near to High Mathernock Farm, Kilmacolm, around 15 miles west of Glasgow, at about 9.20am on Tuesday.

The man has been formally identified as Robert Best, 50, who had been reported missing from Greenock on the same day.

Andrew Brodie, 51, and Stephen Shields, 44, were arrested and charged in connection with the case.

The pair appeared before Greenock Sheriff Court on Wednesday, where they made no plea to the two separate charges of murder and attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

The suspects, both of Greenock, were remanded in custody and are due back in the dock within the next week.

A third man, aged 45, was arrested in connection with assault and released pending further enquiries.

Police Scotland said officers investigating Mr Best’s death are continuing to carry out enquiries into a report of a disturbance in Lansbury Street, Greenock, which took place between 11pm on Monday and 3am on Tuesday.

Those with information who have yet to speak to officers are encouraged to come forward.
