Richard Keys was unable to broadcast on beIN Sports this Saturday after the Foreign Office instructed British citizens across the Gulf to seek immediate shelter amid US and Israeli military strikes on Iran.
The 68-year-old presenter, who has been based in Qatar for 13 years working for the sports network, was forced to abandon his programme as the security situation in the Middle East deteriorated rapidly.
The government warning specifically directed British nationals in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates to remain indoors in secure locations, avoid all travel, and follow guidance from local authorities in response to reported missile attacks.
Taking to X, Keys made his feelings about the military action abundantly clear, writing: “Thank you all for your messages. It was a bit lively earlier.
“I don’t have space to express my feelings about that idiot Trump. No show today.”
He confirmed that viewers would instead be looked after by beIN’s London-based team, adding: “You’ll be in the capable hands of our colleagues in London. Thoughts & prayers for everyone in our region. Ramadan Kareem.”

The veteran broadcaster’s outburst came as the network’s Qatar headquarters found itself in the midst of regional instability following the joint US-Israeli operation.
President Trump declared that “major combat operations” were underway, with the stated objective of achieving regime change in Tehran.

“It will be yours to take. This will be probably your only chance for generations.”
Trump offered immunity to Iranian military personnel who surrendered while warning of “certain death” for those who resisted.
Iran responded with retaliatory strikes of its own, according to Israeli officials, with explosions subsequently reported across the UAE, Bahrain and Kuwait.

The pair have presented Premier League and Champions League coverage for beIN across 24 countries in the Middle East and North Africa, including at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Keys has already been informed his contract will not be renewed when it concludes at the end of this football season, with his final broadcasts scheduled for May.
A spokesman confirmed the decision was mutual, and reports suggest both presenters may step away from live football coverage entirely upon returning to Britain.
