- Many global sports stars swear by it despite the foul taste
It is the secret drink that could help Australia win the Ashes – and it tastes nothing short of disgusting.
Pickle juice is a new-age wellness trend, but many global sports stars – including Premier League players – swear by it.
It is believed necking shots of pickle juice can help prevent cramps when exercising, but it isn’t to be swallowed, as Aussie cricket star Mitch Marsh learnt the hard way in a recent T20 match against India.
In now viral scenes, the skipper gave pickle juice a go in between overs – and soon regretted the decision.
With teammate Marnus Labuschagne in stitches, Marsh asked: ‘What is that?’ before adding, ‘F*** me! That’s f***ing awful!’
Global tennis stars such as Carlos Alcaraz and Frances Tiafoe are big fans of the concoction, with the salt contained in the juice providing a key electrolyte to the body.

NSW Blues winger Jamie Chapman was also pictured using pickle juice during an Origin match (pictured) before wisely spitting out the liquid
Daily Mail also understands minerals such as potassium – an element found in pickle juice – can help athletes stay hydrated for longer.
On Australian shores, the use of pickle juice filtered into the women’s State of Origin and the AFL this year.
NSW Blues winger Jamie Chapman was spotted using the juice to aid a leg cramp mid-match at Allianz Stadium in Sydney on May 15. She wisely spat out the juice.
On the same day, Hawthorn took on the Gold Coast Suns in Darwin. Thanks to the intense humidity, pickle juice was used by many fatigued players at three-quarter time.
Channel Seven analyst Mitch Cleary then learnt what not to do during a live TV cross.
Responding to a dare from veteran commentator Brian ‘BT’ Taylor, Cleary skolled the liquid and was hit with instant regret.
‘Don’t rush to your local supermarket to get some of that into you, BT,’ the media identity grimaced on camera.
Former Hawthorn champion Luke Hodge then educated Cleary on the error of his ways.
‘You’re not supposed to swallow it, you’re supposed to spit it out,’ he said.
For those who dare, pickle juice can be purchased in Australia at Chemist Warehouse.
