Amazon halts plan for drone delivery in Italy just before launching

Just after a year of successful testing, Amazon has taken a bold decision regarding supplying goods across Italy via drones.

“Following a strategic review, Amazon has decided to interrupt its plans with a commercial delivery of drones in Italy,” stated Amazon on Sunday, December 28, 2025.

The e-commerce giant Amazon informed that it has decided not to pursue plans to deliver goods by drone in Italy, saying that while it had made good progress with aerospace regulators, broader business regulatory issues did not support the project.

With reference to that, the Italian civil aviation ENAC called the decision unexpected, saying in a statement on Saturday December 27,2025 that “the move was motivated by company policy, linked to recent financial events involving the Group.”

The company had announced in December 2024 the successful completion of initial tests of delivery drones in San Salvo, a town in the central Abruzzo region, Italy, reports Reuters.

Amazon clearly mentioned that due to weak company policies, wrong financial strategy, and an incompatible regulatory framework, it seems difficult to continue the drone delivery setup, which suggests a reprioritizing of investment strategy.

“Despite positive engagement and progress with Italian aerospace regulators, the broader business regulatory framework in the country does not, at this time, support our longer-term objectives for this program,” said Amazon.
