Furious Carols by Candlelight viewers slam comedian Sammy J’s ‘cringe’ performance: ‘Might be the last time he appears’

Channel Nine’s annual Carols by Candlelight was screened on Wednesday night – and viewers were left very unimpressed by one of the comedians performing.

Melbourne-based funnyman Sammy J, 42, was all smiles as he took to the stage and performed a comedic song about the unconventional Christmas dinner he enjoys – gingerbread, tuna and broccoli pudding.

‘We’ve combined our favourite things! My aunty makes this every year at Christmas time… no one eats it, but she still makes it,’ Sammy quipped to the packed crowd.

He then began performing several amusing songs, in which he put his own distinctive flair on some iconic festive tunes.

‘It’s going to be the perfect Christmas! All we need is a little bit of music… What have we got here… You Crooned Me All Night Long, AC/DC,’ Sammy joked.

However, many of the veteran performer’s gags fell flat with viewers who took to social media to share their thoughts.

‘You Victorians warned me about Sammy J and I still watched it… Oh boy,’ one person sniped on X.

‘Might be the last time Sammy J appears at Carols,’ another quipped.

‘Sammy J ain’t nothing without the puppet Randy,’ someone else chimed in, and another wrote: ‘The Sammy J segment just kept going, huh?’

However, other users enjoyed Sammy’s performance and took to social media to praise him.

‘Loved Sammy’s segment. He always delivers, and the audience participation was great,’ one fan wrote.

‘Sammy did a great job,’ someone else added.

Earlier this month, Channel Nine was accused of delivering a Christmas snub to some of the biggest musical talent to emerge in Australia this year.

Insiders claim the network has deliberately blocked both The Voice and Australian Idol champions from appearing at this year’s Carols By Candlelight.

Daily Mail can reveal Alyssa Delpopolo and Idol winner Marshal Hamburger were both shut out of the line-up for the Christmas Eve celebrations due to network politics.

Despite being two of the biggest young vocal talents in the country to be discovered in 2025, Nine allegedly refused to feature them in festivities this year.

According to industry sources, Nine won’t feature performers tied to the two singing franchises simply because both shows now air on rival network Channel Seven.

A former Australian Idol judge said: ‘When Idol started on Network Ten, performing at Carols was the moment these kids stopped being contestants and became artists.

‘It was a huge platform. To see that opportunity withheld now is disappointing for the talent coming through.’

The general consensus apparently suggests Nine doesn’t want to give Seven a free promotion on the biggest night of the year, even if it means snubbing new artists.

However, it seems it’s not all doom and gloom for Marshal, 20, and Alyssa, 19, as Seven has managed to secure both for their own rival Carols events.

Seven executives are said to be ‘thrilled’ to have secured Marshal for their free Christmas concert, Carols in the Domain, held in Sydney’s Domain Gardens.

The event is televised annually around Australia on Channel Seven and streamed on 7plus.
