A young Florida gym teacher has been arrested after allegedly sending inappropriate photos and text messages to a middle school-aged student. 

Yezmar Angeanis Ramos-Figueroa, 22, was detained by detectives with the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday, according to police.

She was charged with distributing obscene material to a minor and transmitting harmful material to a minor – both felonies – according to Osceola County Corrections and Jail Services records. 

The 13-year-old student’s mother reported the alleged inappropriate contact to police in mid-October.

The 22-year-old was working at Central Pointe Christian Academy as a PE teacher when she allegedly committed the crimes.

The academy is a private K-12 school with different locations for the middle school and the high school. Ramos-Figueroa worked at the middle school in Kissimmee, about 20 miles south of Central Orlando. 

According to the Osceola Sheriff’s Office, detectives obtained text messages and photographs sent to the student’s phone by Ramos-Figueroa after questioning her.

The former PE teacher ‘admitted to texting and sending a picture to the victim,’ the sheriff’s office added.

Ramos-Figueroa ‘admitted to texting and sending a picture to the victim,’ according to the sheriff’s office

Ramos-Figueroa is currently being held at the Osceola County Jail. Her bond is set at $5,000 for each of her charges, for a total of $10,000.

Both of her charges are third-degree felonies. If found guilty, each charge would carry a maximum sentence of five years in prison. 

Teachers being arrested for inappropriate conduct with underage students is not uncommon.

Earlier this month, a 31-year-old former Missouri middle school teacher was sentenced to ten years in prison after she pleaded guilty to sexually abusing at least one student.

She would offer money, marijuana and alcohol in exchange for sex or to allow her to perform oral sex, according to court documents.

The prior month, a Nebraska educator and her boyfriend were arrested and charged with allegedly grooming and sex trafficking a student.

Ramos-Figueroa was working at the middle school location of Central Pointe Christian Academy in Kissimmee as a PE teacher when she allegedly committed the crimes

The teacher reportedly led a student upstairs to her bedroom and made a request that the student interpreted as sexual. After the student declined, the teacher apologized and told her not to tell anyone before giving her $100 in $20 increments, according to court documents.

Last year, a 65-year-old school teacher from California who had previously been fired for inappropriate conversations with a 16-year-old student was arrested after he was caught inside the girl’s bedroom.

In 2017, the mother of a 14-year-old girl found sexts from a 32-year-old teacher on the young teen’s phone. 

In 2016, a former Pennsylvania high school teacher was charged with sending a video showing herself performing a sex act and nude photos of herself to a 17-year-old male student.
