Arne Slot has strongly rejected Jamie Carragher’s damning verdict that Liverpool have become “a team of individuals” during their troubled campaign.
The Dutchman mounted a passionate defence of his squad ahead of tonight’s crucial Champions League last-16 second leg against Galatasaray at Anfield, where the Reds must overturn a one-goal deficit.
Liverpool’s attempt to retain their Premier League crown has fallen apart spectacularly, with inconsistent performances throughout the season heaping significant pressure on Slot.
Sunday’s disappointing 1-1 stalemate with struggling Tottenham at Anfield prompted Carragher to deliver his withering assessment on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football programme the following evening.
The former Liverpool defender outlined his concerns about the current squad, stating: “There’s lots of things wrong with this Liverpool team.
“Nothing’s working or functioning going forward or defending.
“But the biggest thing that stands out for me that Liverpool have lost is the press.”

Carragher questioned whether the issues stemmed from managerial decisions or the players themselves, suggesting the club’s hierarchy believed they had strengthened their squad after last season’s title triumph.
“You could argue that, talent-wise, but Liverpool are not a team – they are a team of individuals,” he declared, pointing to a fundamental disconnect between individual quality and collective performance.
When questioned directly about Carragher’s verdict, Slot offered a spirited rebuttal by highlighting his players’ response after conceding the equaliser against Spurs.

“After so many disappointments, it would not have been strange or weird if the players had given up,” the Liverpool manager explained.
“But they did not.”
He pointed to a specific moment during a Tottenham counter-attack where “seven or eight of our players were back in our 18-yard-box and we blocked the shot.”
Slot argued that such commitment demonstrated genuine togetherness, adding: “A team that has given up, a team of individuals or a team that does not work together, does not show that resilience after our 120th setback this season.”
The manager acknowledged that his squad has not yet developed into the cohesive unit he desires, but attributed this to limited time playing together rather than any selfish mentality.

“It is not like we are 11 individuals, if he meant that then I completely disagree,” Slot insisted.
“If he means we are not perfectly playing together in ball possession and off the ball then he is right. That is nothing to do with an individual mentality but that the connections are not as strong yet.”
He concluded: “I see a team that is fighting together.”
Liverpool currently occupy fifth position in the table, sitting one point above Chelsea, with two trophies still within reach this season.
