Gerwyn Price hints at surprise decision as Premier League night seven looms

Gerwyn Price has indicated he may step away from the sport temporarily, citing the mental toll of professional darts’ relentless schedule.

The Welsh star, 41, made the admission following his 8-3 defeat to Wessel Nijman in Sunday’s European Darts Trophy final.

Despite reaching another major final, Price acknowledged the gruelling nature of the calendar is taking its toll.

The former world champion currently occupies third place in the Premier League Darts standings and is scheduled to compete in Dublin on Thursday, suggesting any potential hiatus would not be immediate despite his candid comments about needing respite.

Taking to social media after the match, Price wrote: “Great weekend for me, another final but very frustrating in the end.

“Onto Dublin this week. Need a break from this, I think.

“It’s so tough mentally. But I’ll push on, thanks for the support.”

The Welshman’s words reveal a player torn between his competitive drive and the psychological demands of maintaining peak performance across a packed fixture list.

His message suggests he intends to honour his Premier League commitments despite his evident fatigue, with night seven in the Irish capital looming just days after his continental disappointment.

Price was generous in his assessment of Nijman’s display, noting the Dutchman consistently performs well against him.

“Every time I play Wessel he plays brilliantly against me. I lost to him in a ProTour final as well so fair play,” he said.

The Welshman attributed his below-par showing partly to the demanding structure of the day’s play.

Having arrived at the venue at 11am and competing in his fourth match, he explained he was unable to return to his accommodation to rest between games.

“I ran out of gas in the end,” Price admitted, whilst crediting his opponent’s excellent form throughout the tournament.

Price holds nine points in the Premier League Darts table, positioning him behind frontrunners Jonny Clayton and Luke Littler heading into the Dublin fixture.

His campaign has not been without success, having claimed victory on night two of the competition when it visited Antwerp.

The 41-year-old’s comments about Nijman carried a competitive edge despite his gracious tone, vowing to exact revenge in future encounters: “Fair play, he has been playing brilliantly today and all year but I will get my own back.”
