ITV forced to apologise on live TV as Ed Chamberlain blasts ‘idiots’

ITV’s Ed Chamberlin found himself having to say sorry to viewers during this afternoon’s Cheltenham Festival coverage after some rather unwelcome interruptions appeared on screen.

The incident happened on Gold Cup day whilst reporter Oli Bell was chatting with Paul from Preston, who had scooped Tuesday’s ITV7 competition.

As the interview unfolded, some choice words could be heard from racegoers in the background, and it wasn’t just the language causing problems – gestures were spotted too.

Once the broadcast cut back to the main presenting desk, Chamberlin stepped in straight away to address what viewers at home had just witnessed during the live coverage from the festival.

Chamberlin didn’t hold back when addressing the situation, telling viewers: “It could be a long afternoon for you as well Oli.

“Apologies if you picked up any language there, there was one gesture as well.

“You can’t keep away the idiots sometimes on live television.”

It’s the sort of thing that comes with the territory when you’re broadcasting live from a packed racecourse, and the presenter clearly wasn’t impressed with those who’d caused the disruption.

The broadcast swiftly moved on to the day’s racing action, with the JCB Triumph Hurdle getting proceedings underway at 1.20pm on day four of the festival.

All eyes then turned to the afternoon’s showpiece event, with a cracking Gold Cup field lined up and ready to go.

The Jukebox Man, owned by football legend Harry Redknapp, was among the fancied runners alongside Gaelic Warrior, Jango Baie and last year’s winner Inothewayurthinkin.

There was some late drama before the big race though, with Spillane’s Tower pulled out due to ground conditions, while Diva Luna was also withdrawn from the 2.40pm Mares’ Chase.
