The prime suspect in the murder of a businessman’s son in Lahore was killed in an alleged police encounter near the Punjab-Sindh border in Rahim Yar Khan, police officials said.
According to authorities, the suspect, identified as Nauman Qaiser, was wanted in connection with the 2023 murder of Muaz Sohrab, the son of a bicycle factory owner, who was shot dead within the jurisdiction of Nasirabad police station.
Police sources said law enforcement agencies received intelligence that the suspect was travelling from Rahim Yar Khan towards Sindh and was allegedly attempting to flee the country. Acting on the information, police set up a checkpoint near the provincial border to intercept him. During the operation, officials stopped a suspicious motorcycle and car near the border area. Police claimed the suspect opened fire on the police team, prompting retaliatory firing. In the ensuing exchange, Nauman Qaiser was killed.
Officials said the deceased suspect was nominated in three criminal cases in Lahore, including the murder case registered at Nasirabad police station, as well as cases at Kahna police station and with the Crime Control Department. One of the cases reportedly related to the alleged murder of his brother-in-law.
Investigators said Muaz Sohrab was killed in 2023 by hired shooters. The two gunmen involved in the attack had already been arrested, tried by a court, and sentenced to life imprisonment.
