Iran has confirmed it will not participate in the 2026 World Cup after war broke out between the nations and the US.
Joint American and Israeli military strikes have been ongoing against the country since February 28.
The bombardment has prompted retaliation from Tehran amid escalating regional turmoil, with neighbouring Middle East nations drawn into the conflict.
Donald Trump’s America will co-host the summer tournament alongside Mexico and Canada.
Iran’s Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamal said on TV: “Since this corrupt government assassinated our leader, we have no conditions under which we can participate in the World Cup.
“In view of the malicious measures taken against Iran, two wars were forced upon us within eight or nine months, and several thousand of our people were killed.
“Therefore, we definitely have no possibility of participating in this way.”
It comes after Gianni Infantino revealed that US President Donald Trump has assured Fifa that Iran is “welcome” to compete.
