More than 87 million lose access to Netflix
Your PlayStation 3 has just lost access to Netflix. The US streamer has pulled the plug on Sony’s beloved console, which sold more than 87 million units worldwide during its lifetime.
You might have already spotted a warning message pop-up on-screen over recent weeks.
It reads: “Unfortunately, Netflix will no longer be available on this device after March 2, 2026. Visit netflix.com/compatibledevices to see a list of supported devices.”
Sony stopped making the PS3 back in 2017, but many still use their console for watching telly via the streaming apps. It also ships with a built-in Blu-ray player.
As recently as 2023, the console still had around two million people using it every month. The news hasn’t gone down well online, either, with fans taking to social media to share their frustration.

Over on Reddit, people explained why they’re genuinely gutted about losing the feature.
“I literally got Netflix on my PS3 a week ago and now they do this, and I can’t play Netflix on the TV in any other way but to connect to a damn laptop.”

Another suggested that this is Sony’s way of pushing users to upgrade to a newer console.
A Reddit user wrote, “Both the PS and the XBOX are facing low adoption rates compared to the previous generation.”

This isn’t to say that you can’t access Netflix in other ways.
Netflix explains on its help page that you can use “any supported smart TV, phone, tablet, streaming player, or game console that connects to the internet and offers the Netflix app.”
You can also simply head to Netflix’s website on your computer and watch directly through your browser. Newer game consoles, such as PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, or Xbox, still allow you to download the streaming app there as well.

Although if you were hoping to hold out until you can upgrade to Sony’s planned release of the PlayStation 6, you may be waiting longer than you originally thought.
The next PlayStation console has been delayed, according to new reports, which suggest the Japanese firm’s rumoured PS6 won’t arrive next year, as many industry-watchers had anticipated.
Sony typically releases its new console generation every six to seven years. With the last console released in 2020, many have been anticipating something new around the corner.
Based on prior releases, Sony typically releases a new PlayStation every six to seven years:
- PS1: (1994)
- PS2: 2000 (approx. 6 years)
- PS3: 2006 (approx. 6 years)
- PS4: 2013 (approx. 7 years)
- PS5: 2020 (approx. 7 years)
There’s also the matter of rising component costs to consider. RAM prices have shot up considerably, which could have given Sony pause when planning its next-generation pricing strategy.
They’re not alone in facing this problem either.
The founder of British start-up Nothing confirms their smartphone price will increase this year, and the first-of-its-kind Freely box was hit with a price rise just two months after its release.
