John Terry vents ‘frustration’ at former club after brutal snub following Enzo Maresca sack

John Terry has expressed his disappointment at being overlooked for Chelsea’s temporary coaching arrangements following Enzo Maresca’s departure at the start of January.

The former Blues captain, who holds a part-time consultancy position within the club’s academy structure, was not included when the hierarchy assembled an interim management team.

Terry, now 45, remains one of Stamford Bridge’s most decorated figures, having accumulated more than 700 appearances during his playing career.

His trophy haul includes five top-flight titles and the Champions League triumph.

The club legend currently works with Chelsea’s Under-18 and Under-21 squads, passing on his considerable experience to the next generation.

Speaking on Jimmy Bullard’s Golf Life YouTube channel, Terry revealed the extent of his dissatisfaction with the decision.

“Not annoyed. Probably more frustrated because I was certainly part of that under-21s group that went over,” he explained.

“So even if I didn’t take the team. Obviously, Calum took the team and did really well. Got a result out of the game.”

Terry went further, questioning the rationale behind his exclusion.

“I feel like I should have been part of them,” he said. “And clearly ownership or whoever made those decisions, the sporting directors have gone ‘no’, not to include me for whatever reason – why, I don’t know.”

The decision to appoint McFarlane ahead of Terry raised eyebrows given the disparity in their coaching qualifications.

McFarlane possesses only a UEFA B Licence, whereas Terry holds the UEFA Pro Licence – the highest coaching credential available in European football.

Nevertheless, the former Southampton Under-21s manager acquitted himself reasonably well during his brief tenure.

Chelsea secured a commendable 1-1 draw against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, with Enzo Fernandez netting a late equaliser.

The second fixture proved more challenging, as the Blues fell 2-1 to Fulham at Craven Cottage after Marc Cucurella received a red card in the 22nd minute.

McFarlane has since been promoted to Liam Rosenior’s first-team coaching staff.

Terry acknowledged that taking charge at Stamford Bridge remains his ultimate ambition, though he conceded this aspiration may require patience.

“I’ve always said if Chelsea ever come up I would love to take over, but then, realistically, do I get Chelsea without doing the other bits? Probably not,” he admitted.

The former England international dismissed recent speculation linking him with the Oxford United vacancy.

“I got linked with the Oxford job recently, which there is no truth in it at all,” Terry stated. “I hadn’t spoken to them. Hadn’t kind of put myself out there.”

He emphasised his contentment working with Chelsea’s youth sides on a part-time basis.
