Kpop Demon Hunters was one of the biggest hits of 2025, but fans shouldn’t expect to see a sequel any time soon.
While a release date for the next instalment of the animated musical was originally promised for 2029, a new report from The Hollywood Reporter indicates that it probably won’t be ready until even later than that.
This means that the next Kpop Demon Hunters film may not see the light of day until 2030 or beyond.
Kristine Belson, current president of Sony Pictures Animation, told the publication that Kpop Demon Hunters directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans are too busy with the first film’s Oscars campaign to start work on the sequel.
‘There’s been a lot to tend to in terms of the awards campaign. After all the noise and awards and big parties with big people — yes. It’ll be back to the two of them in a room,’ Belson said when asked if Kang and Appelhans will helm the sequel together.
Some fans have been less than impressed with the prospect of the next Kpop Demon Hunters movie arriving next decade.

‘Generational fumble. The kids who loved this will have aged up and out by then,’ one commented on X.
‘The kids who are obsessed with it today are going to have long moved onto something else by then,’ added another.
A third wrote, ‘I know we all want a quality sequel but waiting too long will kill the brand.’
Another warned, ‘It will be another Frozen 2, it will make some bank but not the same cultural impact as the first one.’
However, others have pointed out that animated films usually take years to develop, so the lengthy wait for a Kpop Demon Hunters sequel is fairly standard, especially if the creators want the next chapter to have the same quality as the first movie.
‘I’d rather wait four years for a masterpiece than two years for a cash grab. Let them cook,’ wrote one.
‘If the sequel is half as good as the first one and they need that time to make it just as good then that is completely fine,’ a second commented.
‘Some people genuinely don’t understand just how hard it takes to create an animated movie,’ another wrote. ‘It’s a long process and requires time and money, regardless of the films quality. Most standard animated sequels take anywhere between 4-5 years minimum.’

They end up battling a five-member K-pop boy band named the Saja Boys, who also happen to be demons in disguise.
