Ryan Routh, the US man who was found guilty of trying to assassinate Donald Trump at one of the US president’s golf courses, has been jailed for life.
Routh was spotted by secret service agents as he hid in bushes a few hundred metres from where Mr Trump was playing golf at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, in September 2024.
Routh, 59, fled the scene and left behind an assault-style rifle but was later arrested.
He was convicted by a jury of five charges, including attempted assassination, last September after mounting his own defence at trial.
Routh attempted to stab himself in the neck with a pen shortly after he was convicted. Marshals quickly surrounded Routh and he did not hurt himself.
Mr Trump praised the verdict in a post on his Truth Social site, calling Routh an “evil man with an evil intention, and they caught him”.
Routh’s attack came weeks after Mr Trump survived another assassination attempt in Pennsylvania.
