Motorway speed limits slashed to 50mph nationwide in major update
National Highways has confirmed that it has successfully completed a national technology upgrade that saw speed limits slashed on motorways across the country.
Posting on social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, National Highways reported that it had reduced speed limits to 50mph nationally for safety.
It stated that this was a planned overnight technology upgrade and has been completed successfully.
Motorists will see reduced speed limits when National Highways completes “essential maintenance and upgrades” to traffic management systems.
National Highways posted: “We’ve reduced speed limits to 50mph nationally for safety while we carry out a planned overnight technology upgrade.
“You won’t see us at the roadside as we’re working behind the scenes. Thanks for your patience.”
The nationwide maintenance and upgrade works took place between 10.30pm on Saturday (January 24) and 2.30am on Sunday (January 25).
Further works will take place on the M4 between Junction 11 and Junction 13 between Monday (January 26) and Friday (January 30) every day between 10am and 2pm.

Reduced speed limits are crucial to the upgrades of the network to protect road users and reduce the possibility of an accident.
National Highways clarified that there would be additional Traffic Officer patrols when upgrades are taking place.
The transport organisation added that it keeps drivers updated with the latest traffic news on social media and its website.
At present, drivers are being warned of two serious traffic issues, with motorists dealing with delays and diversion routes.

PAMotorists are bracing themselves for long delays on the M25 this morning after a multi-vehicle collision anti-clockwise between J23 (A1M, South Mimms) and J22 (St Albans).
Hertfordshire Police and other emergency services are in attendance, while National Highways Traffic Officers are assisting with traffic management.
Diverted traffic is advised to follow the hollow square diversion symbol:
- Exit the M25 anti-clockwise at J23 and take the fourth exit at the roundabout onto the A1M northbound towards Hatfield
- Exit the A1M northbound at J3 and take the first exit at the roundabout onto the A414 towards St Albans
- At the A141/A1081 London Colney Roundabout, take the first exit onto the A1081 towards London
- At the next roundabout, take the third exit towards Radlett, then cross over the M25 to the next roundabout and then take the second exit onto the B556 towards Radlett
- At the next roundabout, take the second exit to re-join the M25 anti-clockwise
Drivers in Hertfordshire are dealing with long delays on the M1 and M25 this morning

The M1 in Hertfordshire is also closed southbound between J6 (St Albans) and J5 (Watford) following a collision.
Emergency services are currently on the scene dealing with the issue, while drivers are advised to follow the hollow circle diversion symbol. The diversion will see drivers travel along the following route:
- Exit the M1 southbound at J6
- At the end of the exit slip (Waterdale), turn left onto the A405/St Albans Road/Kingsway North Orbital Road
- At the Leavesdon roundabout/A41 Interchange, take the first exit on the A41 N. Western Avenue
- At the Dome roundabout, take the second exit continuing on the A41 Colne Way/N. Western Avenue
- At the Berrygrove roundabout, take the second exit to access the M1 J5 southbound entry slip
