Barrow sack Dino Maamria after six games as ‘very disappointing season’ forces fourth manager search

League Two side Barrow has sacked Dino Maamria as manager after just six matches, making him the third boss to depart Holker Street during this turbulent campaign.

The 54-year-old, who previously managed Burton and Oldham, secured just a single victory during his brief spell in charge.

His departure comes less than 24 hours after a 2-0 defeat to Bristol Rovers on Tuesday evening proved the final straw for club officials.

The Bluebirds currently occupy 22nd place in League Two with 28 points, remaining outside the relegation places solely on goal difference.

Fears of dropping out of the EFL have prompted the hierarchy to act decisively once again.

Midfielder Sam Foley has been appointed as interim boss and will oversee the team for the remainder of the season.

The managerial merry-go-round at Barrow began when Andy Whing was relieved of his duties on December 10 after starting the campaign in charge.

Paul Gallagher was confirmed as his replacement on January 2, but the 41-year-old endured a disastrous run of five consecutive defeats.

His tenure lasted just five matches before the club parted ways with him on February 11.

Maamria was handed the reins on the same day Gallagher departed, tasked with rescuing the Bluebirds’ season.

However, four losses from six fixtures sealed his fate, with Tuesday’s reverse against Bristol Rovers ending his month-long spell.

A club statement confirmed the news.

It read: “Barrow AFC can confirm Dino Maamria has left the club today.

“We would like to thank Dino for his efforts and wish him well for the future.

“Sam Foley, supported by Simon Ireland and David Worrall, will take the team until the end of the season.

“We recognise that this has been a very disappointing season with far too much managerial change.”

The club confirmed that a planned supporters’ question-and-answer session will proceed on Friday, with board members set to address fans’ concerns.

Barrow now face the daunting challenge of finding a fourth permanent manager this season as they battle to retain their Football League status.

The Cumbrian club earned promotion to the fourth tier in 2020 after claiming the National League title during the 2019/20 campaign.

Their initial seasons back in the EFL proved difficult, with finishes of 21st and 22nd in their opening two years.

Fortunes improved dramatically under Pete Wild, who guided the club to an impressive ninth-place finish in 2022/23, followed by an eighth-place finish the following season.

Last term saw a decline to 16th, and this campaign has brought even greater struggles.

The Bluebirds return to action on Saturday when they welcome Accrington Stanley to Holker Street, with kick-off at 3pm.
