Motorway shuts for ’emergency recovery operation’ over fears around ‘HGV loaded with metal poles’

Drivers are being warned of an accident on the M49 this afternoon, which could lead to delays for motorists.

The M49 in Gloucestershire is closed southbound between Junction 22 of the M4 and Junction 19 of the M5.

National Highways reports that the closure is in place for an “emergency recovery operation”, prompting further traffic delays.

The organisation noted that a “heavy goods vehicle loaded with metal poles shifted within the trailer”, making onward travel “unsafe”.

Recovery teams are at the scene working to re-secure the load, with the closure necessary to ensure road users are safe.

Data from National Highways traffic maps suggests that the event will clear by around 2.15pm, although this could be pushed back.

The stretch of road remains closed on the southbound carriageway, while stationary traffic is present on the westbound carriageway.

Drivers could see delays between Avonmouth and Almondsbury, heading towards the M5/M4 interchange.

National Highways confirmed that it would provide updates once recovery is complete and the road can be reopened.

National Highways has outlined a diversion route for anyone travelling on the westbound carriageway.

They are advised to continue eastbound on the M4 until they reach Junction 20 (Almondsbury Interchange).

From here, motorists should take the M5 southbound and continue their onward journey towards the South West of England.

Further traffic delays are being seen on bridges near Bristol connecting England with Wales over the River Severn.

A “road management” issue has resulted in the closure of one of the lanes on the M48 westbound between J1 and J2.

Meanwhile, slow-moving traffic is seen on the Prince of Wales Bridge heading towards Newport.
