First-year New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn refused to discuss his team’s injury list with reporters on Tuesday in an apparent protest over a recent ESPN report about receiver Garrett Wilson’s status.
Wilson will miss the next three to four weeks with a knee injury, but will not need surgery, sources told veteran ESPN reporter Rich Cimini.
Displeased with ESPN’s report, Glenn spent Tuesday referring all injury questions to Cimini, who wasn’t in attendance.
‘I’m going to pass on talking about injuries, since Rich — he’s not here — has all the answers. So, you guys can get all the injuries from Rich.’
Things only got more bizarre from there.
Asked about another player’s injury status, Glenn told the reporter to ‘ask Rich.’
A two-game winning streak couldn’t prevent a tense exchange between Glenn and reporters
‘I’m asking you,’ the reporter responded. ‘Well, I’m telling you to ask Rich,’ Glenn replied. ‘He’s not here, though,’ another added.
When a reporter explained the significance of hearing injury news from the coach, Glenn remained unmoved.
‘You guys have been hearing [injury reports] from me, but now since we’re just reporting stuff that I haven’t said, then maybe you should ask him,’ Glenn said.
At that point, the Jets’ PR team ended the tense press conference so Glenn could head off to practice.
As for the team injury report, which is released after practice, Wilson, rookie cornerback Azareye’h Thomas (concussion) and defensive tackle Harrison Phillips (foot) were all idle.
The Jets have yet to confirm the extent of Wilson’s knee injury.
Riding a two-game winning streak, the 2-7 Jets now head to Foxborough for a Thursday Night Football matchup with the 8-2 New England Patriots.
