Tariff cut comes into effect under the monthly fuel adjustment mechanism and will apply to consumers nationwide

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority has announced a cut in electricity tariffs by 48 paisa per unit under the monthly fuel adjustment mechanism, according to a notification issued on Saturday.

The price cut will be reflected in the current month’s bills and will be applied to consumers nationwide, including those receiving power from K-Electric.

NEPRA said the adjustment is expected to provide relief of more than Rs5 billion to consumers. The reduction follows fluctuations in fuel costs reviewed on a monthly basis under the existing tariff structure.

Meanwhile, in Karachi, the Sindh High Court dismissed a petition filed by Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi Chief Munim Zafar Khan challenging load shedding in the city on the basis of line losses.

During the hearing, the court noted that, in line with previous Supreme Court directions, petitions related to load shedding are not maintainable before the high court.

The petitioner’s counsel argued that outages linked to line losses were unlawful and had severely disrupted daily life across several neighbourhoods.

However, the bench ruled that the appropriate forum to address such complaints is NEPRA. The court observed that Section 39 of the NEPRA Act provides the petitioner the option to directly approach the regulatory authority.

The court directed NEPRA to resolve the complaint within one month and submit a compliance report to MIT-2.
