NASA prepares for first crewed Moon mission in over 50 years
NASA prepares for historic Artemis 2 mission around the Moon

Artemis 2 is one of the most anticipated missions since the Apollo program ended in 1972, marking the first time in over 50 years that humans will return closer to the vicinity of the Moon.

The mission will send four astronauts on a winding route around the moon and back to Earth, testing the system that will eventually return humans to the lunar surface.

The 10-day mission is scheduled for launch no earlier than February 2026.

What is Artemis 2?

Artemis 2 is a crewed mission using a hybrid free-return trajectory designed to validate Orion, SLS, and the mission operations required for future landings.

Artemis 1 successfully flew Orion around the Moon without a crew in 2022, Artemis 2 marks the first time humans traveled aboard the spacecraft.

Artemis 2 will not land on the moon; rather, it serves as a crucial stepping stone toward future Artemis operations to put astronauts on the lunar surface later in the decade.

The mission will include three NASA astronauts and one astronaut from the Canadian Space Agency.

  • Reid Wiseman (NASA)-commander
  • Victor Glover (NASA)-Pilot
  • Christina Koch (NASA)-Mission specialist
  • Jeremy Hansen (CSA)-Mission specialist

When will Artemis 2 be launched?

The Artemis II launch is tentatively scheduled for no earlier than September 2025 from the Launch Complex at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The timeline depends on the final testing of the SLS rocket, the Onion spacecraft, and mission control centres.

NASA continues to scrutinize data from Artemis 1, which demonstrated Orion’s heat shield performance during a record-breaking flight that reached thousands of miles beyond the Moon.

Key areas to access four major areas

The mission targets four key objectives

  • Mission planning and operations
  • Spacecraft and system performance
  • Crew interfaces
  • Guidance, navigation and communications

Future prediction following Artemis 2

As reported by Space.com, the next planned mission is Artemis 3 which is set to land on the surface in 2027.

It is vital to understand how the capsule behaves as it descends to the surface. The strategy involves the Lunar Gateway as a staging point; these incremental steps allow us to make necessary adjustments to the plan.

Engineers will spend months scrutinizing data to analyse the readiness for the next phase of Artemis.

The next planned mission is scheduled to land on the surface of the moon in 2027. The Artemis 2 mission is more pivotal than just a flight around the Moon, and it is a definitive turning point in human history.
