A Louisiana mother was arrested after her one-year-old son nearly drowned in their backyard pool while her husband played on his iPad

Kelly Briscoe, 33, of Baton Rouge, was charged with cruelty to juveniles, child desertion, and the improper supervision of a minor after her son, who was not identified, was rushed to the hospital in early September.

The child and his older brother, 2, had been caught on surveillance footage wandering around the pool when the younger sibling slipped on the corner and plunged into the deep end.

He remained under the water for nearly four minutes before Briscoe found him, police said.

The boy was taken to the hospital and later discharged, but could still face medical issues from the incident, according to WAFB 9

The mother allegedly told investigators she had asked her husband, who was playing on his iPad, to prepare the children for bed while she went into her room.

He allegedly told her he would take them outside, WBRZ reported. It is unclear if he will face charges.

A little while later, Briscoe when looking for the children when she hadn’t heard them for some time. She discovered her youngest at the bottom of the 12-foot pool and her eldest unattended nearby.

She faces up to 12.5 years in custody under Louisiana state law, if convicted.

Nearby Kansas mother, Crystina Schroer, 51, of Wichita suburb Rose Hill, was sentenced to 215 months in prison over the death of six-year-old Natalie Marie Garcia, also known as Kennedy Schroer, in 2020.

She adopted five girls, including Natalie, and shoved them in boxes for moving around at night and starved them.

Natalie died of suffocation following being placed in a small box with heavy blankets and objects on top while her sister was forced to watch.
