NBA legends LeBron James and Steph Curry have poured cold water on rumors that they will play for Team USA at the 2028 Olympics

Both James and Curry played a crucial role in USA’s triumph in Paris last summer, helping the team clinch their fifth straight Olympic gold medal in men’s basketball.

Curry, in particular, drew acclaim for his performance in the final against hosts France, where he scored 24 points during their 98-87 victory at the Accor Arena.

With that in mind, fans are hopeful that the two veteran stars will run it back when the Olympic Games roll around to Los Angeles, California in 2028.

However, during a recent podcast episode, James ruled himself out of the running while Curry admitted it’s ‘highly unlikely’.

On Mind the Game – hosted by James and Steve Nash – the Lakers star said: ‘You already know my answer. I will be watching it from Cabo’.

Meanwhile, Golden State star Curry said: ‘God willing I still have the choice and the physical option to feel like I can actually impact the team.

‘I’d never say never, but I highly doubt it. I’d love to be a part of the movement’.

James then chimed back in to say: ‘We can’t top what we just did. We can’t top those last two games, and just, the moment. We literally played France in Paris.’

Though he didn’t put up a performance as strong as Curry in the final, James was later named the MVP of the men’s basketball competition.

He finished the final with 14 points, six rebounds and nine assists while Durant and Devin Booker both added 15 points for the eventual winners.

On Tuesday night, Lakers star James set the NBA record for most seasons played after making his debut in the 2025 season following a return from injury.

‘King’ James has been sidelined for the Lakers’ opening 14 games of the season after developing sciatica but is set to return for the clash at the Crypto.com Arena.

James has been training with their G League affiliate in South Bay, in a bid to build up his fitness, before making his return to the court on Tuesday against the Jazz.

In James’ absence, the Lakers have been lead by Luka Doncic – who leads the league with 34.4 points-per-game – and rising stars Austin Reaves and Jake LaRavia.

Meanwhile, Reaves has developed into one of the Lakers’ most reliable players this season and ranks ninth in the NBA for points-per-game with 28.3.

He’s also averaging 8.2 assists-per-game, which sits him in sixth in NBA rankings.

Adding James back into the mix will only benefit the Lakers – who are currently 10-4 this season – and cement their position as contenders in the Western Conference.
