Kyler Murray’s Vikings deal adds competition for quarterback J.J. McCarthy

Quarterback Kyler Murray has signed with the Minnesota Vikings after being released by the Arizona Cardinals earlier this month.

The Vikings confirmed the move on Thursday, and according to ESPN, the agreement is a one year contract.

ESPN reported that the Vikings will pay 1.3 million dollars of the 36.8 million dollars Murray was already guaranteed under his previous contract with Arizona.

The Cardinals agreed to release Murray on 3 March, though the move only became official on Wednesday.

Murray now joins a Minnesota quarterback group that includes former No. 10 draft pick J.J. McCarthy.

Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell has spoken during the off season about strengthening the team’s depth at quarterback.

McCarthy has started just 10 games in two seasons since Minnesota selected him in the 2024 draft.

The young quarterback has also struggled with injuries, including a torn right meniscus that forced him to miss the entire 2024 season.

Murray, 28, spent seven seasons with the Cardinals and was selected first overall in the 2019 NFL Draft after winning the Heisman Trophy.

The signing could create competition for the starting quarterback role in Minnesota heading into the new season.
