Body camera footage shows the moment two kind-hearted Washington State Highway Patrol troopers rescued a terrified kitten hiding in the crack of a concrete road barrier in the middle of Interstate 5 near Tacoma on Wednesday.

Troopers Bonner and Fath responded to a 911 call at around 11.30am after motorists spotted the tiny feline.

Video obtained by the Daily Mail shows Bonner lying flat on the ground as he reaches into a large crack at the bottom of a road barrier.

He is then seen pulling a little gray striped kitten out before raising it up to his face and saying, ‘Aw such a cutie!’

The video cuts to one of the troopers taking the cat into his patrol vehicle and setting it on his lap before driving to a veterinarian for a checkup.

The kitten is then heard meowing while looking up at the trooper with its face directly in view of the body camera, and the trooper then meows back at the cat.

A spokesperson for Washington State Highway Patrol said one of the troopers in the district took the kitten home to care for it. It is unclear if that trooper will keep the cat or if it will be fostered or put up for adoption.

The kitten weighed about a pound, and it is unclear how it ended up stranded on the highway.

The tabby was aptly named ‘trooper’ by the troopers who rescued it.

On X, where the state highway patrol posted the video that has racked up nearly 25,000 views so far, the nearby city of Sumner’s account responded by congratulating the troopers on a job well done.

‘Let us know if you ever want a future in animal control,’ they quipped.

Other users shared their enjoyment of the video and thanked the troopers as well.

One wrote: ‘Trooper of the year award has been sewn up! Nice job guys. And letting the little guy ride up front…’

Another wrote: ‘looks like the local station just got themselves a new mascot.’

A third said: ‘Thank you!!! Meow did good!!! Paw five!!!’

A fourth chimed in: ‘Awesome! thank you for saving that kitty.’

It’s not the first time a cat was rescued from a dangerous situation.

In 2018, a man rescued a newborn kitten that was glued to the side of a road near Salem in Oregon. He and his wife adopted the little cat and named it ‘sticky.’

In 2022, a Louisiana man stopped to help a kitten on the side of a road before a total of 13 little cats swarmed him. He scooped up all of them and took them home.

In December 2024, California Highway Patrol rescued a cat that was weaving through traffic on a highway and resembled the late internet sensation ‘Grumpy Cat.’
