A teenage student has tragically jumped to his death from the fifth floor of a private Manhattan high school on Thursday morning.

The boy, 16, leapt from a window around 9.30am, according to The New York Post.

The tragedy happened at Regis High School – a prestigious all–male, Jesuit high school on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City.

The teen – whose identity was not shared by the New York City Police Department – had been waiting outside a first–floor administrator’s office for a disciplinary issue, the report stated.

He then walked up to the fifth floor before falling to his death near East 84th Street and Madison Avenue.

The student was rushed to Weill Cornell Medical Center in stable condition but suddenly died around 11.45am, the outlet said.

The New York Police Department told the Daily Mail that the student had been found with ‘injuries indicative of falling from an elevated position’ after responding to a 911 call at 9.29am.

Police said the incident remained under investigation and that no arrests had been made.

As of Thursday night, the boy’s identity had not been released pending proper family notification.

Regis High School is a tuition–free private school for Catholic boys that touts an ‘academically exceptional Jesuit education in a caring community,’ according to its website.

The school has 540 male students. Its faculty consists of three Jesuit priests, as well as 56 lay men and women.

A man in a black shirt with a priest collar walking out of Regis told The New York Post ‘someone had an accident’ that resulted in serious injury.

A nearby resident said a Regis parent told her the school had notified families about an ‘incident’ and was sending everyone home.

Virginia Maloney, the New York City councilmember–elect for the district that Regis is in, called what happened ‘every parent’s worst fear.’

She wrote on X: ‘Our kids are carrying more than we often realize, and schools need more mental health resources: counselors with capacity, safe spaces, and systems that catch kids before they fall through the cracks.’

The Daily Mail reached out to Regis High School after–hours for comment.
