Holliday Grainger has paid a sweet tribute to her The Capture newcomer, Killian Scott, as he takes on a new role for the third series of the hit BBC show.

The BBC’s cyber-thriller The Capture returned for its third series, with the second episode set to broadcast tonight at 9pm on BBC One.

The new instalment arrives almost four years after the second series aired in August 2022, picking up the story of deepfake technology and intelligence operations that first captivated audiences when the programme launched in 2019.

Viewers can also stream episodes on BBC iPlayer, where new instalments drop weekly alongside the television broadcast.

The six-part series continues to follow the battle against Correction, a covert video manipulation programme operated by UK intelligence services, as the conspiracy surrounding fabricated digital evidence deepens further into the British establishment.

Grainger reprises her role as Rachel Carey, who has climbed the ranks considerably since viewers first encountered her as an ambitious officer on the Met’s fast-track scheme.

Twelve months after broadcasting a live deepfake of a government minister to expose Correction, Carey now serves as Acting Commander of Counter Terrorism Command.

Carey is determined to restore public confidence in surveillance through a new camera system, but their plan is sabotaged when a devastating and meticulously coordinated terrorist attack strikes at the heart of the British establishment.

Speaking about her return to Carey, Grainger said: “I relied on the research I did back in series one, including shadowing officers in the Met and speaking to fast-track DIs. Each series builds on that foundation.

This time, Carey carries a gun for the first time, so we had firearms training. It’s always fun learning new skills and it was great feeling like an action hero for a moment!”

Paying tribute to newcomer Scott and what it was like working with him, she noted: “He’s a lovely person and a fantastic actor.

“Noah [Pierson] has so many different facets, and each episode reveals a different side of him. Watching Killian bring all of that to life has been really fun.”

Creator and writer Ben Chanan has revealed his distinctive approach to crafting the thriller, treating every series as though it might be the programme’s final outing.

The 51-year-old told Radio Times: “I always write each season like it might be the last, so just don’t hold on to people who have got to go and you may as well enjoy offing them.

“Now, what it does for Carey is like the wheels are off… when (certain characters) go, it’s like the wheels spin, she finds it discombobulating.”
