A gunman shot dead two people in a Walgreens car park situated close to the Players Championship venue in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, on Friday evening before fleeing onto the TPC Sawgrass golf course.
St. Johns County Sheriff Rob Hardwick identified the suspect as Christian Barrios, who allegedly fired multiple shots at the victims at approximately 10:30pm local time.
The sheriff described the incident as a domestic violence situation.
The pharmacy is positioned roughly a mile from the prestigious golf tournament’s grounds.
Police launched an extensive manhunt for Barrios, who celebrated his 32nd birthday on Saturday.
Authorities later confirmed they apprehended Barrios at around 8am on Saturday morning, bringing the manhunt to a close.
Tournament organisers responded to the unfolding situation by pushing back spectator entry for Saturday’s third round, with gates remaining closed until 9am.
The PGA attributed this decision to “operational considerations” stemming from the overnight incident.
