Filipe Luis has been dismissed as Flamengo manager moments after guiding his side to a remarkable 8-0 thrashing of Madureira in the Carioca Championship semi-final.

The 40-year-old former Chelsea defender was relieved of his duties immediately following his post-match press conference, with the Brazilian giants confirming the decision via social media.

The club released a statement reading: “Clube de Regatas do Flamengo informs that Filipe Luís will no longer be in charge of the professional team.”

Flamengo expressed gratitude to their former player turned coach “for everything that was achieved and shared during this journey,” wishing him well for his future career.

Brazilian reports suggest Luis had no inkling of his impending departure whilst addressing journalists after the comprehensive victory.

Upon leaving the press room, the manager was informed that sporting director Jose Boto wished to speak with him urgently.

The exchange between the pair reportedly lasted a mere half-minute, during which Luis learned his tenure had come to an abrupt end.

Adding to the unceremonious nature of his exit, the 40-year-old was denied the opportunity to bid farewell to his players, who had already departed the stadium by the time the conversation concluded.

Luis is nonetheless anticipated to return to Flamengo’s Ninho do Urubu training facility in the coming days.

Despite the emphatic scoreline against Madureira, Flamengo’s 2025 campaign has been deeply troubled, representing the club’s most disappointing opening to a season in 10 years.

The Brazilian powerhouse surrendered the Supercopa do Brasil to Corinthians and fell to Argentine side Lanús in the Recopa Sudamericana.

These setbacks proved fatal to Luis’s position, notwithstanding his considerable achievements during his maiden managerial role.

Having assumed control of Flamengo in March 2024, the former left-back delivered silverware in his debut season, claiming both the Copa do Brasil and the prestigious Copa Libertadores.

Such triumphs, however, were insufficient to shield him from the consequences of the current campaign’s early failures.

The 40-year-old’s connection to English football adds intrigue to his sudden departure, having lifted the Premier League trophy with Chelsea during the 2014-15 season under José Mourinho’s stewardship.

The Brazilian made 26 appearances for the Blues during his solitary campaign at Stamford Bridge, sandwiched between two spells at Atlético Madrid, registering one goal and a single assist.

Earlier this year, Luis emerged as a candidate for the Chelsea managerial vacancy following Enzo Maresca’s dismissal, though the position ultimately went to Liam Rosenior.

Alongside the head coach, assistant Ivan Palanco and physical trainer Diogo Linhares have also been removed from their positions at the Rio de Janeiro club.
