Emilia Fox has disclosed that she and television producer Jonathan Stadlen ended their relationship in February last year.

The Silent Witness star opened up about the split in a recent interview, revealing how she has been coping in the months since.

Speaking to Radio Times, Ms Fox shared: “Actually, Jonathan and I separated last February.

“The end of a relationship is always sad, but with age and life experience, you draw on the things that make you feel better and do them, like going on girly trips with [Ms Fox’s daughter] Rose and being with friends.”

The actress, who plays Dr Nikki Alexander in the long-running BBC drama, reflected on how maturity has helped her process the end of the relationship, acknowledging that drawing on past experiences has been crucial to moving forward.

With nearly twelve months having passed since the separation, the 50-year-old actress said she is now in a positive place.

“It’s been nearly a year now and I’m feeling positive,” she told the publication.

The breakup came at a time when Fox’s professional life was also undergoing significant changes, with Silent Witness relocating its production from the capital to Birmingham.

The relocation of Silent Witness to Birmingham in 2024 presented logistical challenges for Ms Fox, who is based in London.

However, her daughter Rose’s decision to begin weekly boarding school made the arrangement feasible.

“It wouldn’t have worked if Rose hadn’t started weekly boarding school,” Ms Fox explained. “She wanted to be with her contemporaries, which I really understood.”

The actress drew parallels with her own upbringing, noting that she made a similar choice at the age of 13.

Growing up as effectively an only child for much of her youth—with half-sister Lucy being 15 years her senior and brother Freddie not arriving until Fox was a teenager—she understood Rose’s desire to spend more time with peers.

“Rose has flourished,” Ms Fox added, explaining that the arrangement has allowed her to spend extended periods away from home for filming.

The new series of Silent Witness launches on BBC One on Monday, February 2, with Ms Fox reprising her role as forensic pathologist Dr Nikki Alexander.

Season 29 marks the programme’s permanent shift from London to Birmingham, where the team will operate from the newly established Sir William Bowman Centre of Excellence.
