Diogo Dalot has 100 per cent faith that Ruben Amorim is the right man to put Manchester United back on top, despite the head coach capping off a miserable six months in charge with defeat in the Europa League final.

United’s shambolic campaign, their worst in 51 years, hit a new low in Bilbao with a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, extinguishing any hope of European football next season.

Amorim spoke afterwards that he would leave without any compensation if ownership and fans no longer have faith in him.

But Dalot is adamant that players are totally convinced that Amorim is the right man for the job.

‘I’m 100 per cent sure that he’s the right man for us because I see it every day, the standards that he has, what he demands from us, the view that he has for the club, for the players, for the coaching staff,’ he said.

‘A lot of changes are happening at the same time, but ultimately it’s going to be what we do on the pitch. We have to take responsibility from that.

‘Nobody apart from us is going to the pitch and try to get results. So this season it’s been obviously a very way off how this club should be and the way this club deserves.

‘We have to take responsibility on that and take this time that we’re going to be away.’

Team-mate Luke Shaw said bluntly after the game that players need to question if they are truly good enough to play for Manchester United.

Dalot echoed those sentiments and believes that an inability to foster a winning mentality is hurting any chance at progress.

‘Results will determine a lot of things in football, as you know,’ he said. ‘When you don’t win games, you always tend to go towards more negativity than positivity.

‘The reality is that this season we didn’t get the results that we wanted. Sometimes we deserved, sometimes, pretty much a lot of times, we didn’t.

‘I think that’s the consistency we need to find. We need to find a way to win games and that winning mentality, the winning way I think will lead us to have more confidence as a team, the fans will feel more comfortable, we as a club will feel more confident and as soon as we start having that consistency I think things will start going up.

‘If we keep this rollercoaster of results, of emotions, of standards, it will be really hard.

‘But like I said, this club will never die in my opinion, so if we want to be a part of the team that is going to put Man United back on top, we need to do much, much better.’

Manchester United finish out the season at home against Aston Villa on Sunday before immediately jetting off on an £8million post-season tour of Hong Kong and Malaysia.
