Diane Ladd dead at 89: Oscar-nominated actress and mother of Laura Dern passes away in California

Oscar-nominated actress Diane Ladd, best known for her roles in role as the waitress Flo in the 1974 film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, has died at age 89 at her home in Ojai, California.

Her daughter Laura Dern confirmed the news in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter on Monday. 

‘My amazing hero and my profound gift of a mother, Diane Ladd, passed with me beside her this morning, at her home in Ojai, Calif.,’ Dern, 58.

She continued: ‘She was the greatest daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist and empathetic spirit that only dreams could have seemingly created,’ she added. ‘We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now.’

Ladd earned three Oscar nominations over her lifetime for her roles in Martin Scorsese‘s Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974), Wild at Heart (1990) and Rambling Rose (1991). 

Ladd’s other biggest credits include Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983), Ghosts of Mississippi (1996), 28 Days (2000), Charlie’s War (2003), Joy (2015) and Gigi & Nate (2022).

Additionally, she appeared on TV shows like Kingdom Hospital and Chesapeake Shores. 

In 2018, Dern admitted to People her mom tried to dissuade her from pursuing acting.

‘I think the quote of my mother’s was, “Be a lawyer, be a doctor, be a leper missionary, but don’t be an actress!”‘ she mused.
