Demi Moore on what perfectionism means to her

Demi Moore says she no longer aims for perfection and that a simple piece of advice reshaped her perspective.

The actor opened up during a Power Talks panel hosted by Kérastase at NYA Studios in Los Angeles on March 3, reflecting on how she once felt pressure to be “perfect.”

“I had somebody say something so interesting about being perfect, because I certainly have been trapped by trying to be perfect,” Moore, 63, said.

Recalling the conversation, she said the person asked whether she knew anyone or anything that was perfect. “I said, ‘No.’ And he said, ‘Well, why would you want to be no one and nothing?’”

The Substance star also spoke about refusing to follow arbitrary expectations surrounding age and appearance.

Moore said she once heard that women should cut their hair when they reach a certain age—advice she chose to ignore. “I remember being told, ‘Well … when you get to be a certain age, you should cut your hair, you shouldn’t have long hair,’” she said. “And it didn’t make sense to me why that was some collective rule.”

On the contrary, the actress suggested that people should choose what makes them feel confident and comfortable. “So I let my hair grow, and I am quite attached to it,” she added.

The Landman actor said she often reminds her children that change is the only constant in life.

“The only thing that we can truly count on—the only true constant—is change,” Moore said. “We can either flow with it or resist it and be limited by it. I would much rather be in the flow.”
