Envoi Allen has died after collapsing on the horsewalk following the completion of the Cheltenham Gold Cup this afternoon.

The 12-year-old, who had been competing in what was planned as his farewell race before retirement, fell to the ground after finishing the contest. Screens were immediately erected around the stricken horse to provide privacy.

Despite receiving immediate veterinary attention at the racecourse, the beloved chaser could not be saved.

ITV confirmed the devastating news just minutes after Gaelic Warrior had claimed victory in the prestigious race.

This was Envoi Allen’s eighth appearance at the Cheltenham Festival, marking what should have been a fitting conclusion to his remarkable career.

Envoi Allen’s career was nothing short of extraordinary, with the horse securing 10 grade one victories throughout his time in racing.

At Cheltenham alone, he triumphed on three separate occasions, claiming the Champion Bumper, Turners Novices’ Chase and Ryanair Chase during previous Festivals.

Darragh O’Keeffe was in the saddle for his final outing this afternoon.

Trainer Henry de Bromhead spoke of how well the horse had been in the lead-up to the race, stating “he was so well at home that they had to let him run this afternoon”.

The decision to allow him one last competitive appearance ultimately ended in heartbreak for connections and racing fans alike.

Gaelic Warrior delivered a commanding performance to secure Gold Cup glory for trainer Willie Mullins, with Paul Townend guiding the eight-year-old to an eight-length triumph.

The favourite travelled smoothly throughout before pulling clear after the final fence, with Jango Baie finishing second and defending champion Inothewayurthinkin taking third.

Townend was overcome with emotion afterwards, telling ITV: “I’m speechless. This was a huge team effort, I was just the fortunate one to get to ride him today.”

However, celebrations were overshadowed by the loss of Envoi Allen, who became the third equine fatality at this year’s Festival.

Hansgard died on the opening day, while HMS Seahorse perished during day two’s racing.
