ISLAMABAD:

Amid a row between the PML-N and PPP over using the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) to provide relief to flood victims, the programme’s chief stressed that the credibility of this “globally recognized initiative” should not be undermined by politics.

“BISP maintains data on 35 million families and delivers immediate relief during disasters so affected people can be supported without delay,” BISP Chairperson Senator Rubina told a press conference on Thursday.

Rubina, who also belongs to the PPP, noted that the programme, which is currently under wide discussion, continues to support millions of citizens across the country.

“I will not speak politically today; I will only address BISP’s Kafalat, Nashonuma, Wazaif, and skills programmes. Negative talk is easy, but bringing projects to completion is what truly matters. The PPP has always respected national institutions,” she said.

According to Rubina, the BISP supports 10 million families and directly benefits 60 million individuals. Each eligible family receives Rs13,500, which she stressed should not be dismissed as insignificant. “For many families, this amount is of immense importance and must not be looked down upon.”

Through the Nashonuma Programme, she said, 3.6 million women are receiving benefits, with child growth stunting reduced by 6.4%. According to an Aga Khan University report, stunting among children under six months of age has fallen by 20%. Under the education programme, 1.87 million children are enrolled.
