Canadian tennis players Gabriel Diallo and Denis Shapovalov both advanced at the Indian Wells tournament, while Bianca Andreescu was eliminated in the first round.
Diallo, a 24-year-old from Montreal ranked No. 38 in the world, defeated Italy’s Mattia Bellucci in straight sets on Wednesday.
Diallo beat the 94th ranked Bellucci 7-6 (5), 6-4 to move into the second round of the ATP event.
The victory marked Diallo’s first win on the ATP Tour in nearly two months after he had been eliminated in the first round of his previous four tournaments as he recorded 10 aces and committed just one double fault during the match.
Later in the day, Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Ontario defeated Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas to also advance.
Diallo will next face Russia’s Andrey Rublev, the tournament’s 17th seed. Shapovalov is set to play Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry, the 29th seed.
Elsewhere in the men’s draw, Alexis Galarneau of Laval, Quebec lost to France’ s Gael Monfils.
In the women’s competition, Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario lost to Uzbekistan’s Kamilla Rakhimova.
Andreescu, who won the Indian Wells title in 2019, recorded 12 aces but struggled with five double faults.
Fellow Canadian Marina Stakusic also exited the tournament after losing to Austria’s Anastasia Potapova.
