Bong Joon Ho, the legendary South Korean director has opened up about Netflix acquiring Warner Bros. in latest move.

The director, who was the jury president this year at the Marrakech Film Festival, was asked about his thoughts on the Netflix-Warner Bros deal at the event.

An audience member asked, “What do you think about this acquisition, and what do you think about films being screened on TV, even large TVs, and in cinemas with an audience? How do you see the future of cinema?”

Bong, famously known for directing films like the Oscar-winning Parasite and Snowpiercer, jokingly responded, “To be honest, I don’t know what’s going on there in LA. I’m just a South Korean guy staying at home.” However, he noted that he really enjoyed watching two movies per day “in the big theatre, with the big screen” over ten days at the Marrakech Film Festival.

Adding, “Streaming is also a good way to watch and enjoy movies.”

“But I don’t think the cinematic experience will disappear so easily,” Bong Joon Ho said.

This comes after Netflix announced its plan to buy Warner Bros and HBO Max in an $82.7 billion deal on Friday. Many critics are referring to the deal as the “death of cinema.”
