Billionaire Barry Diller has come out as gay – and says iconic fashion designer wife Diane Von Furstenburg is the only woman he’s ever loved.
Diller, the 83 year-old co-founder of the Fox Broadcasting Company, opened up about his homosexuality in a soul-baring New York magazine article published Tuesday.
He said of Von Furstenburg: ‘While there have been a good many men in my life, there has only ever been one woman, and she didn’t come into my life until I was 33 years old.’
Diller has long faced speculation over his sexuality.
He says that as his professional stock rose during the 1960s and 1970s, he became increasingly terrified that revealing his preference for men would derail his career.
Diller wrote: ‘I wouldn’t do a single thing to make anyone believe I was living a heterosexual life.’
The tycoon said he realized he was gay as a child and spent started secretly cruising for other men as a teenager in West Hollywood.
Diller said he’d ‘dart in and out’ of the side doors of gay bars but that he felt overwhelmed by a trip to gay haven Fire Island Pines during his 20s.
The tycoon explained how he put his sexuality ‘in a distant box’ as his wealth and success soared and hoped he’d be able to suppress it forever
Diller said he became aware that his sexuality was a subject of gossip among elite circles but that he ‘never wanted to make any declarations.
He said he was simply ‘too scared to do so,’ and said that coming of age in a less tolerant era had made it much harder for him to be open about who he was.
Diller met Von Furstenburg – creator of the wrap dress – in 1974, when he was 33.
The couple had an on-off relationship until 1991 and finally married in 2001.
Diller described their union as a ‘unique and complete love.’
