LAHORE:

The Punjab Home Department has extended the enforcement of Section 144 across the province for another seven days.

According to a notification issued on Sunday, an order imposed under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure will remain in force until March 14.

Authorities said the extension had been made in light of prevailing security concerns and intelligence-based threat alerts to public peace and order.

The restrictions had been imposed on March 1 following violent protests and security concerns that emerged after reports of the death of Iran’s supreme leader triggered unrest in parts of the country. Violent incidents claiming lives, especially outside United States consulates and public buildings, were reported.

The government had cited intelligence reports warning of potential threats to public safety. Under the restrictions, public assemblies, rallies, demonstrations, sit-ins or processions involving four or more persons are prohibited without prior permission from the relevant deputy commissioner.

The order also bans the carrying, display or brandishing of weapons, including licensed, in public places across the province. The restriction does not apply to personnel of law enforcement and security agencies performing official duties.

Officials stressed that the order was a general security measure and not limited to any particular religious event.
