Paul Merson has sensationally claimed that Arsenal would win the Premier League by as many as 10 points if they were to sign one player this summer.
After beating Tottenham 5-1 on Sunday, Liverpool pipped the Gunners to the title with four games to go and a 15-point lead, making Arne Slot‘s side the joint-third earliest champions in Premier League history.
Arsenal have trailed Liverpool since November, with the Reds sitting in first place for the past five months amid a 26-game unbeaten league run.
For Mikel Arteta‘s side, a significant obstacle to Premier League success has been their lacklustre goalscoring record, especially compared to their imperious defence.
Arsenal have scored 63 goals in the league this season, 17 fewer than Liverpool, and less than Newcastle (65) and Manchester City (66). Meanwhile, the Gunners have allowed just 29 goals compared to Liverpool’s 32.
In light of their struggles up top, the common discourse surrounding Arsenal is that they need to add a proper No 9 to their ranks come summer, with Newcastle’s Alexander Isak topping many fans’ lists of summer hopefuls.

And Merson argued that if Arsenal were to land Isak’s signature this summer, the 25-year-old would help them blow their competition out of the water.
‘Let’s not forget – [Newcastle] are a big club now and, if they qualify for the Champions League, they’ll be an attractive project for any player,’ the pundit told Sportskeeda.
‘I think Isak surely wants to be involved in the Champions League next season and that will play a key role.
‘Arsenal seem like the best possible move for him if he leaves Newcastle. If the Gunners get him, they will win the league by 10 points.’
Arteta is believed to be a long-time admirer of Isak, and Arsenal have been linked with a move for him in recent years.
Newcastle sources insist there is no asking price for a player they want to keep at St James’ Park, but it would almost certainly take a fee in excess of the British record £115m Chelsea paid for Moises Caicedo if he were to leave.
Isak’s situation on Tyneside is not straightforward. He is already the club’s top earner and has a contract until 2028. However, there is no doubt a player of his calibre could demand a higher wage elsewhere.
For now, Newcastle are unable to improve his contract status because of PSR, but a return to the Champions League would likely change that stance come the summer. It would also provide the player with the platform of the top European competition he desires.

Mikel Arteta has long been an admirer of Isak as Arsenal have been linked with him for years

Isak has torn up the Premier League this season, scoring 22 goals and providing six assists
Last month, Isak revealed ‘no talks’ have been held regarding a new contract at Newcastle, insisting that discussions surrounding his future will have to wait until the end of the season.
The Swede said: ‘I think I’ve said, I’m not really thinking about the summer. But yeah, that’ll probably be a talking point once the season is finished. We will really see, because no talks have been held yet.’
Isak has lit up the Premier League this season, netting 22 goals and providing six assists in 31 appearances.
His goalscoring tally is the second-most of any player, while the frontman has also tallied the second-most goal contributions (28) in the league in 2024-25.
