Scotland captain Andy Robertson was overcome with emotion talking about his “mate” Diogo Jota after leading his nation to next year’s World Cup.
The Liverpool defender paid an emotional tribute to his former Reds teammate, who was tragically killed in a car crash with his brother André Silva in Spain earlier this year.
Speaking after the Tartan Army beat Denmark 4-2 at Hampden Park on Tuesday night to secure their place at the tournament in North America, Robertson dedicated helping his side qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1998 to Jota.
The left-back also expressed his sorrow at the death of his fellow 2025 Premier League winner just moments before kick off.

Robertson said he suffered “trouble” before stepping onto the pitch, telling the BBC: “Today I may be in bits.
“I couldn’t get my mate Diego Jota out of my head today. We spoke so much together about the World Cup.”

PA“He missed out in Qatar 2022 through injury and I’d missed out with Scotland and we always discussed what it would be like going to the World Cup.”
Robertson, who attended Jota’s and his partner Rute Cardoso’s wedding just 11 days before his death on July 3, added: “I know he will be somewhere smiling.
“I just could not get him out of my head the whole day. I was in a bit of trouble in my room earlier. I am just so glad it has ended up this way.”
“We were quite emotional. To do it for him, the staff and all our families, it’ll go down as one of the greatest nights of my life.”
