Tensions boiled over at the Vitality Stadium as Jordan Henderson became embroiled in a heated post-match confrontation following Brentford’s frustrating stalemate with Bournemouth.

The ill-tempered scenes unfolded after the final whistle of Tuesday night’s drab 0–0 draw between Bournemouth and Brentford – a result that denied the visitors the chance to leapfrog Chelsea in the race for sixth place.

While the match itself offered little excitement, the drama erupted moments later as players and staff from both sides clashed while making their way toward the tunnel.

Eyewitnesses saw Henderson at the centre of the confrontation as tempers flared among members of both squads.

The former England captain appeared determined to push through the gathering crowd in an attempt to confront Bournemouth assistant coach Tommy Elphick.

At one stage Henderson had to be physically pulled away by those around him before the situation threatened to spiral further out of control.

The tense exchange quickly drew in several figures from both benches as players and coaching staff attempted to calm the situation.

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola was among those stepping in to restore order as the confrontation unfolded near the touchline.

Fortunately, the flashpoint was brought under control before the altercation could escalate into something more serious.

After the match Iraola suggested the dispute had stemmed from a heated argument between Henderson and one of his coaching staff.

According to the Spaniard, the Brentford midfielder had taken issue with comments from Bournemouth assistant Shaun Cooper.

“I’m always someone who tries to calm things down,” Iraola explained when asked about the incident afterwards.

“I’m not exactly sure how it started. It was Jordan Henderson and Coops having a strong argument but nothing really happened beyond that.”

The Bournemouth boss insisted that while the exchange had been fiery, the confrontation never crossed a serious line.

“Everyone is defending their own interests,” he added. “I don’t know how it began but there were no consequences from it.

“I was shaking hands with Keith and the fourth official when something started behind me, but we stopped the situation very early. It was a big argument but nothing more.”

Brentford manager Keith Andrews admitted afterwards he had little idea what had triggered the brief flare-up.

“I don’t know what happened,” he said bluntly.

The tense finale capped a frustrating evening for Brentford, who failed to break down a stubborn Bournemouth side in a match short on clear chances.

With the stalemate leaving the Bees still chasing European qualification, Henderson and his teammates must now quickly turn their attention to their next challenge.

They will return to action on Monday night when Brentford travel across the capital to face West Ham United in their FA Cup fifth-round clash.

Meanwhile Bournemouth will look to refocus ahead of their weekend fixture, with Iraola’s side heading to Turf Moor to face relegation-threatened Burnley on Saturday.
