Alex de Minaur suffered a surprise first round exit at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC after falling to American Patrick Kypson in three sets on Monday.
Kypson defeated the second seed 6-1, 6-7(4), 7-6(4) in a match that lasted two hours and 39 minutes. The win marked Kypson’s first tour level victory since Indian Wells in 2024.
After the match Kypson said: “It feels amazing. Everything was important. I had to serve well. I had to return well. I did my forehand really big. Luckily, I was able to do those things for a pretty extended period of time.”
De Minaur was playing his first tournament since winning the Rotterdam title two weeks ago.
The Australian had a chance to close out the match while serving at 5-4 in the final set, but Kypson broke back and forced a tie break to seal the win.
According to Infosys ATP Stats, Kypson won 71 per cent of his first serve points and converted three of five break points.
The 26-year-old American moves up to No. 93 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings and will face Brandon Nakashima in the second round.
